One of the most common questions I have gotten these days have been…. “If I want to give a camera as a gift, what should I buy?” Or, “What should I choose for myself?”

Well then, the first thing you must consider is:

1.- Brand. Choose whatever you feel the most comfortable with. And ask yourself these questions… can you have tech support in your city? Do you have a family member of friend who can share equipment with you? Are you purchasing it in Mexico or in another country? Are you purchasing it by Internet or are you traveling personally? If you are doing it by web, think that you might be subject to pay taxes when picking it up.

2,. Do not buy the cheapest one. If you really like photography, the most important thing to do is to purchase intelligently. If you are saving pennies in your purchase, think again. Do your own research and if you plan to really start your own business in photography take this seriously. You are not supposed to invest in cheap equipment; it will make your business grow so invest carefully.

3.-Do not purchase the famous “kit”. It is tempting, I know but the lenses that you are getting are mainly basic and it will make you have a smaller vision. Think of buying a lens with a good aperture (50 mm f 1.8, 85 mm f 1.8) which you can find in a very good price. Sometimes, it is almost the same as getting the kit and you will have a very different angle in your hands giving you the best way to take advantage of your equipment.

4.- Think that you are not only purchasing a good camera body and a good lens but also a good memory. If your camera takes video, even a greater reason to look out for a better memory. An extra battery is also good to keep in mind. And a good sleeve to protect your camera is also a good investment. If your equipment is worth $1500, purchase something around $100 dls.

5.- A good flash will always change your vision. I suggest that you purchase a cable that makes you able to use it “off the camera” too.

And last but not least, when you have your equipment use it. Enjoy it, fall in love with it and make it part of your life.

Happy Holidays.

Felices fiestas.
