Can you imagine a place with the architecture and traditions from Europe and the lifestyle of America?, well, that place is Fredericksburg, Texas, a beautiful town full of history and German traditions. I was there today for a few hours and definitely, I need to be back soon and refill my huge bottle of beer.
Podrías imaginar un lugar que reuna la arquitectura y tradiciones de un pueblo alemán y el estilo de vida de Estados Unidos?, bueno, ese lugar se llama Fredericksburg, Texas. El día de hoy estuve un par de horas buscando locaciones para un proyecto, y definitivamente, tengo que regresar muy pronto para poder llenar nuevamente mi enorme botella de cerveza.
Today, I had the fortune to work for Austin Monthly Magazine once again. A year ago I made the photo shoot for the January Cover 2010. But this time I had the honor to shoot the February Cover (FYI, February is the best month of the year because I celebrate my birthday).
Hoy tuve la fortuna de volver a trabajar con la revista Austin Monthly, con la cuál hace justo un año realicé la portada de la edición del mes de Enero del 2010, ahora tendré el honor de la portada del mes de Febrero (el mejor mes del año, pues es cuando cumplo años).
The difference between my last cover and this one, is the AM Mag crew, Damian DeMartino (Art Director) and Candice Lawler (Photo Editor). I really thank you guys for thinking of me for this photo shoot. The idea was resolved a few weeks ago when Candice sent me the photo reference, Valentine's Day, shinny day, lovely day...but, Houston, we got a problem...the weather in Austin was horrible; rainy, cloudy, and the forecast didn't look good...however magic happened; the Sun made an appearance by showing us his first ray of light, and with that I could make the shot. Although I had to create my own Sun because the real one wasn't in the right place, and I needed shadows from left to right for the shot.
A diferencia de la portada del mes de Enero, en esta ocasión trabajé con un equipo distinto, Damian DeMartino (Director de Arte) y Candice Lawler (Editora de Fotografía), a los cuáles les agradezco haber pensado en mi para esta sesión. La idea estaba resuelta, hace un par de semanas me hicieron llegar la imagen de referencia la cuál habría que desarrollar, y por ser el mes del día del amor y la amistad tendría que verse como un bello día soleado, el problema es que el clima en la ciudad de Austin no mejoraba, lluvia, frío, y un pronóstico del clima nada alentador, pero al igual que el año pasado, como por arte de magia el clima mejoró, el sol dejó ver unos cuantos rayos solares y con eso fué suficiente para realizar la toma. Cree mi propio sol pues el verdadero sol no estaba en la posición que deseaba y la toma requería sobras de izquierda a derecha de adelante hacia atrás.

A few months ago I have seen a short film series called "Imaginantes" which narrate shorts stories of important people or general culture moments. These days of "must"-vacations to me, I have taken some time to watch such short films. They are marvelous. If you speak Spanish, it is important that you watch them so you can know what I talk about. Even if you don't speak Spanish, watch, they are fantastic.
Hace un par de meses había visto una serie de cortos titulados "Imaginantes", los cuáles narran pequeñas historias de personajes o sucesos de interés general. Estos días de vacaciones forzadas para mi, he aprovechado para ver los diversos cortos, y debo decirlo, son maravillosos. Si hablas español es importante que los veas para que entiendas realmente de lo que hablo, y si no hablas español, de todas formas tienes que verlos, no te preocupes por no entender de lo que hablan, el simple hecho de verlos es realmente fantástico.
I have enough inspiration for now, just by watching these short films. The video that I am publishing talks about Gabriel Figueroa, Mexican cinematographer. One of my favorites, he is a true artist and a source of inspiration that look forward to succeed.

I'm not a traditional person, but that doesn't mean that I don't like traditions. At HW 360 (Capital of Texas), in the city of Austin, families, couples and friends have made a tradition of their own. And you can see this traditions from HW 183 until RR 2222 every year. The trees whether they are big or small are decorated by ornaments as a normal Christmas tree would be. The difference here is that these trees are not cut. It is not a bad idea; decorating trees and be able to share with the rest of the community. I'll may pickup this tradition next year and make it one of a few I have.
No soy una persona de tradiciones, pero eso no quiere decir que no me gusten las tradiciones. En la carretera 360 (Capital of Texas), en la ciudad de Austin, familias, parejas o amigos, han hecho de la zona que abarca desde la carretera 183 (Reserch Boulevard) hasta la carretera 2222, una tradición año con año. Los árboles sin importar sean chicos o sean grandes son adornados tal como lo haría cualquier persona en casa, a diferencia que los árboles de la 360 no son talados. No suena mala idea, en lugar de comprar un árbol de Navidad, salir a buscar un árbol y adornarlo, compartiendo con el resto de las personas un buen detalle de Navidad, posiblemente lo haga el próximo año, y por que no, a lo mejor se convierte en una de las pocas tradiciones que tengo en mi vida.
I have read many blogs and specialized websites that talk wonders about the iPad but I have found none that talks about how the iPad is great to support your work in a professional photo shoot. A few days ago, I downloaded the Capture Pilot software (from Capture) and it works perfectly. It allows you to take a photo (you must have your camera plugged into the iPad) so you can see the photo that your camera shows in the screen in the iPad almost simultaneously. This allows you and your client to see what you see in an instant! And, it avoids expensive hardware to be around and exposed to an accident. The iPad is more comfortable and your client can be seated down with the iPad in its hands! However, this is not the main feature. What I like the most, is that you are now able to see your photos in a RAW file in a small monitor that is portable too. You just have to buy a USB cable that allows you to connect the iPad and the camera and you are able to download the photos that you recently took into the iPad by just importing them. You can view files that are RAW, TIFF or JPEG allowing you to see a detailed and a clear image of your shots. This cable/adapter is around $30dlls.
He leido en blogs y páginas especializados en fotografía que hablan de las maravillas del iPad como herramienta de trabajo y de ventas para fotógrafos, pero no he encontrado por ninguna parte una de las ventajas que para mi es de las mas importantes en el uso del iPad como herramienta de apoyo o de trabajo en una sesión de fotografía. Hace un par de días bajé de forma gratuita la aplicación llamada Capture Pilot, la cuál funciona de manera conjunta con el software Capture One, el cuál te permite que al momento que tomes una fotografía estando tu cámara conectada a la computadora, mandar de forma aérea la fotografía que acabas de tomar directamente al iPad, permitiendo de esta forma que tu cliente la vea al instante en el dispositivo sin necesidad de estar al rededor del monitor principal, es decir, el cleinte puede estar confortablemente sentado con el iPad en mano y va a ver justo lo que uno ve en el monitor. Pero ya hablaré de eso en alguna ocasión. De lo que quiero hablarles ahora, es de una simple manera de ver las fotografías de una manera fácil, rápida y cómoda. Si tu ya eres dueño de un iPad, solo tendrás que comprar el conector USB el cuál te permitirá conectar directamente tu cámara al iPad permitiendo descargar las fotografías que quieras al instante, ya sean RAW, TIFF o JPG, permitiéndote ver de una manera mas clara y a detalle cada una de tus tomas. El costo del adaptador es de aproximadamente $30 dlls.
Another advantage is that as a photographer that works mainly on location, I spend most of my times on locations that are not adapted to have computer equipment around or laptops that are more than 2,000 dollars. The iPad is just $600 dlls (the cheapest and smallest one in capacity) and it allows you to see high resolution images to be sent directly to the client for approval (be sure to get wi-fi). It is a very light and practical device that will only take a minimal space in your backpack.
Otra de las ventajas para mi que soy un fotógrafo que prácticamente trabaja en locación y muy seguido en circunstancias no muy aptas para traer equipos de computación como laptops con costos superiores los 2 mil dlls, es justo eso, el dispositivo iPad no supera los $600 dlls (el mas barato), te permite poder ver las tomas en alta resolución y mandarlas al cliente para su aprobación inmediatamente (en caso que tengas acceso wifi), y por ser un dispositivo sumamente ligero y práctico que no ocupará mayor espacio en tu mochila de fotografía.
I can conclude, the iPad is an awesome working tool for photographers either professional or amateur. It's cost is affordable and it has multiple applications that makes it more attractive for those who are always looking for the best technology out there. I am sure that the iPad won't make you more popular or a better photographer but it will allow you to show your work better.
En resumen, el iPad en mi muy opinión personal es un dispositivo realmente útil para los fotógrafos profesionales como aficionados, su costo lo hace accesible y sus múltiples aplicaciones lo hacen aún mas atractivo para los que gustamos de usar la tecnología a nuestro favor, pero recuerda, no es mas que una herramienta, no te hará ni mas popular ni te hará tomar mejores fotografías, pero definitivamente es una muy buena herramienta de trabajo para todo tipo de fotógrafos.
Through these two videos I want to answer that question that people have asked me in reference to the use of the iPad for professional photography (and amateur too). Most definitely I am not getting paid by Mr. Steve Jobs, so what I think of the iPad is merely a personal opinion and my point of view. So, by no means and I mean none, my opinion is not absolute and you as a photographer or a photographer lover, may have your own opinion whether it is useful or not.
A través de estos dos videos quiero contestar a la pregunta que me han hecho a últimos días varias personas respecto al uso del iPad en la fotografía profesional (y de pasatiempo). Definitivamente no soy patrocinado por el Sr. Steve Jobs, así que mis opiniones aquí expresadas no son mas que mi muy personal punto de vista, por lo que no se debe de entender bajo ninguna circunstancia que mi opinión es absuluta, y tu como fotógrafo serás quién juzgue a través de tu propia experiencia el uso práctico o impráctico del iPad.
I confess that since it was first released I had the interest of owning one, and I resisted. However, a few weeks ago, I felt the “need” to buy it and so I did. I had the opportunity to show my work to a very important person in the photography world, and I had no more than 24 hours to update my portfolio with my most recent work which I had been working for the past 15 days. So, I had two choices: 1. Update my print portfolio, which meant not only to invest long hours of work to obtain the result that I wanted and adapting each print into a 11x17 inches paper. Along with that, do test colors, go to my favorite photo shop and buy ink cartridges and hope (yes, hope) that these lasted (each cartridge is 8 dlls and my printer uses 8 cartridges). Or, 2. Go to the Apple Store, drive for 20 minutes to get there, buy an iPad, come back to my office, upload the photos that I wanted to show and update my portfolio in a few minutes instead of hours. Time did matter. So, my decision was to buy an iPad (good one, by the way).
Confieso que desde que salió el dispositivo a la venta mi inquietud por hacerme de una unidad era demasiado, pero me resistí por un tiempo, hasta que hace unas semanas la "necesidad" me hizo por fin comprarme el famoso dispositivo de la manzanita. Se me presentó la oportunidad de mostrar mi portafolio a una persona importante del medio de la fotografía profesional, por lo que tenía menos de 24 horas para actualizar mi portafolio con mi mas reciente trabajo el cuál no tenía mas de 15 días de haber terminado, por lo que tenía dos opciones, actulizar mi portafolio impreso, lo cuál significaba invertir algunas buenas horas de trabajo en adaptar mis fotografías al formato 11"x17", hacer pruebas de color, ir a mi tienda de fotografía a comprar papel mate, y esperar a que mis cartuchos de tinta rindieran lo que tenían que rendir (cada cartucho vale aproximadamente 8 dlls, y la impresora usa 8 cartuchos distintos). Mi segunda opción era definitivamente ir a la Apple Store que me queda a no mas de 20 minutos, comprar el iPad, regresar a mi departamento y cargar directamente de mi computadora al dispositivo mis fotografías. El tiempo tomó la última decisión y comprar el dispositivo fué la opción (la mas acertada).
I have read articles and publications of apps that were designed for the IPad focused in photography. The apps were about doing your own portfolio in a professional way, by using video which in my case, I love to show my “behind-the-scenes” in a video. So, as soon as I was back in my office, I logged into my App Store and bought an app for $14.99. It was ideal for me, and it was just a matter of making it my own. I looked for a tutorial on youtube which showed my how to make my own icons and ready. Honestly, I have read many positive and negative comments of using the iPad as a portfolio and I think that those who are against it, don’t own an iPad or are just denying how technology is evolving to make tools that are useful. When I bought my printer the Canon Pro 9000 Mark II, the total investment of the purchase with paper, cartridges, a portfolio and the sheets was about $1,500 dlls. When I bought the iPad, and my app I spent $600 dlls. No, I am not against the use of print portfolios, I still have mine and I still use mine for every major appointment but having an iPad enables me to have my updated portfolio with me at all times. Besides, I have also bought other apps that are perfect for my industry such as the text editors as well as photography software, model releases formats, Internet, and thousand of apps more. It is a great advantage to have an iPad and to have a print portfolio but, as I said before, you make your own decisions. For me, the investment was totally worth it.
Anteriormente había leído artículos sobre aplicaciones diseñadas para iPad, donde uno puede armar su portafolio de una manera profesional, integrando tanto la fotografía como el video, que en mi caso, son mis videos que muestran los famosos "detrás de escena". Por lo que al llegar al departamente ya sabía justo lo que tenía que hacer, meterme a la App Store, y por $14.99 dlls comprar la aplicación ideal para mi portafolio, ya solo fué cuestión de personalizarla, buscar un buen tutorial en youtube donde me enseñaran a cambiar el ícono de la aplicación por mi logotipo y listo. Sinceramente, he leído muchos comentarios en contra y a favor del uso del iPad como portafolio, y creo que quiénes están en contra es por que aún no tienen un iPad, o por que siemplemente se niegan al progreso en el uso de nuevas tecnologías y herramientas. Para ponerlo mas en contexto, al comprar mi impresora Canon Pro 9000 Mark II, el costo de esta, mas el papel, los cartuchos de repuesto, las laminas de poliester y la carpeta de metal, el costo total fué de aproximadamente $1,500.00 dlls, más todo lo que he comprado posterior. Al comprar el iPad y la aplicación para el portafolio el costo total fué de no mas de $600 dlls. Con esto no quiero decir que esté en contra de los portafolios tradicionales, para nada, yo aún tengo el mio y lo utilizo en caso que mis clientes o posibles clientes quieran verlo, pero definitivamente tener una dispositivo como el iPad que te permita tener tu portafolio actualizado al instante, que te permita utilizar todo tipoo de aplicaciones, como editores de texto, editores de fotografía, internet, formatos para model releases, y mil cosas mas, es una gran ventaja sobre el portafolio tradicional, pero como dije al principio, tu tienes la última palabra sobre tus decisiones, pero para mi, desde el día uno valió la pena la inversión.
If there is something that I am grateful for this year is that I have been fortunate to do big projects, great clients and been able to make incredible friends. Holly, Mike and Judd are the best example of what I mean. I had the opportunity to work with them a few months back and that is how I met them. Now, a few months later I have the opportunity to share a project with them, the difference is that they are now my friends and we have shared beers and moments when we do not talk about work. However, we do keep our friendship by respecting us as professionals.
Si hay algo de lo que puedo estar agradecido este año, es que he tenido grandes proyectos, grandes clientes y grandes amigos. Holly, Mike y Judd son un ejemplo de lo que me refiero. Hace algunos meses tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en un proyecto para Hahn Texas, donde tuve la oportunidad de conocerlos, ahora, meses después, tengo la oportunidad de compartir nuevamente un nuevo proyecto con ellos, la diferencia, que ahora mis clientes se han convertido en unos muy buenos amigos, con los que se puedo salir sin necesidad de hablar de cosas laborales, o seguir trabajando con ellos respetándonos como profesionales que somos.
I have had many Christmases, some more difficult than others. This one is special, this is Rocco's first year with a Christmas tree of his own. Enjoy the season and do not spend on unnecessary stuff. Try and practice a good quality about yourself for 21 days. (There is a theory that if you repeat a habit for 21 days it becomes routine). You might turn out to be a better person.
Han pasado ya muchas Navidades, unas mas difíciles que otras, pero este año es muy especial, por que es el primer año que Rocco tiene su propio pino de Navidad, así que disfruten la temporada, no gasten en cosas innecesarias, y aunque sea por 21 días aprendan a ser mejores personas (dicen que si por 21 días repites la misma actividad se te hace una rutina, igual y lo peor que pueda pasar es que termines siendo una mejor persona).
This last Monday (November 22nd) I had the honor to be invited to talk about my experience as a photographer in the 8th Edition of the Photographers Congress in the city of Monterrey, N.L. The event was organized by CONARTE. I am pleased and happy to know that there are efforts being directed to the photography as a profession and as an art. I also noticed that people are very interested in learning and not only on how to take a good picture but also to learn about what is around it such as contacting clients, being able to be commissioned a project, and the creation of their own personal projects as well as their marketing...
El pasado lunes 22 de Noviembre, tuve el honor de ser invitado a exponer mi experiencia como fotógrafo en el 8º Encuentro de Fotografía en la ciudad de Monterrey, N.L.. Dicho evento fué organizado por CONARTE. Me da gusto saber que se están haciendo esfuerzos enfocados a la profesionalización del arte de la fotografía, que la gente realmente está interesada en aprender cada día más no solamente a saber como tomar una buena fotografía, sino de todo lo que implica, contactar al cliente, captar proyectos, desarrollo de proyectos personales, marketing, etc...
If you have the opportunity to attend to these congresses, talks, seminars or just be able to read about photography, I truly recommend them to you. There is nothing more important than to practice and be open to learn from others that have knowledge and experience, no matter where it comes from.
Si tienen la oportunidad de acercarse a congresos, platicas, seminarios, o simplemente leer sobre fotografía, se los recomiendo, pues no hay mejor escuela que la práctica, el ver a otros, el estar abiertos al conocimiento sin importar la fuente de donde vengan.
